Alumi Craft Racers Bounce Back At Glen Helen

Thursday, September 21, 2017

San Bernardino, CA (September 21, 2017) - After dominating much of the 2017 season, Alumi Craft Pro Buggy competitors Darren Hardesty Jr, Elliot Watson, and Sterling Cling, all suffered mechanical maladies during round 11 of the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series at Glen Helen Raceway in San Bernardino, Ca.

Pole sitter Watson broke his throttle cable at the drop of the green flag and had to look on in anguish as the field left him sitting on the front straight. That left Hardesty in second, and Cling in third to carry on. After several laps, Cling broke a shock absorber on the rough track and began dropping positions. After a yellow flag and a restart, Hardesty seemed inconsistent, running fast in some spots but slowing in others. It turned out that he had lost third and fourth gears in the transmission. While Cling dropped back in the field, Hardesty did an amazing job trying to keep pace despite having only top gear available. He simply kept the throttle pinned, even off the jumps, trying to keep his rpm's in an acceptable range. Instead of slowing for the corner, dropping down a gear, and accelerating out, Hardesty just kept the throttle down and hoped to stay in control as he railed every turn on the very edge of control.

The result was a DNF for Watson after starting on the pole, a 4th place for Hardesty, and an 8th place finish for Cling, the last car to finish on the lead lap. It was a far cry for the three Alumi Craft drivers who maintain the top three spots in the Pro Buggy points championship. Every racer will admit that they would take any bit of luck that comes their way. Despite the problems they faced, the three Alumi Craft racers were relatively unscathed. Their results had very little effect on their standings in the points, other than Hardesty putting a little cushion between he and Watson who have been locked in an intense battle for the top spot all season. Currently, Hardesty is leading with 571 points, Watson is second with 548 and Cling is third with 540.

Watson was right back on his tail for second, and Cling battled to the final podium position in third. With twelve rounds completed, 36 possible podium positions have been available.
